The first Rainsbury we can trace is William Rainsbury, 1812-1871, a shopkeeper and the canteen keeper on Haulbowline Island, off Queenstown, Cork. But we do not know where he came from, who his parents were: we do think he had children Robert William, Antony & maybe Margaret as well as Joseph. His wife was maybe one Bridget Molloy, of whom we know nothing other than she lived until at least 1875, having a license . Son Joseph ~1845-1905, was a Wine and Spirit merchant, shopkeeper & Canteen Keeper on Haulbowline Island 1875-1890, then a church clerk but seemingly unemployed by 1901C in Drinane Street, Cork, and then moving to Sheffield - with his wife and younger children- dying in the WorkHouse there in 1905
From David Bateman- February 2018
1. 18 Jan 1883 Margaret Florence Rainsbuoy died aged 1 year and 8 months. The civil records are full of transcription errors like this. Also there is a big tribe of Rainsberrys who sometimes are recorded as Rainsburys.
2. 11 Mar 1886 Mary Grace Rainsbury died 5 hours after birth.
3. Atony Rainsbery is hiding in the 1901 Census. There seems no way to prove this Catholic family is linked to Dick's but it is possible. They are in Cork City not Queenstown (Cobh) which is about 20 miles distant. Note that all Irish civil records from 1845 to 1864 refer to Church of Ireland affiliation only.
A great many English settlers in the Munster Plantation after 1584 seemed to come from Somerset and the south of England and the Cromwellian grantees of 1642 include Rainsboro while the version Rainsborough shows up in Griffiths Valuation. The destruction of our early census records (by bureaucratic bungle) and of many Church of Ireland records in the 1922 civil war and the failure to put the surviving records online make research before 1845 rather difficult.
