William Lyons ~1810-1887

Farmer at Drumbaragh , General Merchant & Shopkeeper . Lived Newbliss, Monaghan 1860

1810. William Lyons was born to Alexander Lyons & his unknown wife - maybe an Unknown Calvin?

Another son would appear to be Henry Lyons: the famous "Henry Lyons & Company, Ltd." of Sligo town has been in business since 1835. The store founder was an uncle of Richard Lyons - circumstancial proof of this relationship .

James Lyons 1821 of Newbliss was also a son: he had father Alexander

And very likely John Lyons of Sligo

In the Valuation Office books, William Lyons was listed in the Townland of Lisdarragh in 1839 with a house, offices and yard, among "Houses in the Town of Newbliss."

~1836 William Lyons would have married, maybe in Monaghan , Jane Unknown

William & Jane had the following 11 children , likely all born Monaghan

Mary Jane Lyons ~1837-1870. Alexander Lyons. Another daughter pre 1847 . Richard Lyons ~1844 . Henry Lyons. John Lyons. Ellen Lyons ~1847-1870- the 3rd daughter . Maggie Lyons ~1851-1933. William Thomas Lyons 1856 -1902 .Lizzie Lyons ~1857-1882; James Lyons ~1859-1929

In the 1860 Valuation, William Lyons was still listed in Newbliss with "House, offs. & garden," as well as "Market - (Ho. part of), offs & yard" and "Craneage of Market" ["cranage" = use of cranes]. The entry between his entry for House and the one for Market is Andrew (Andre) M. Kerr, Town Hall. The Market House, built about 1830 with five bays in two stories, arcading and a carriage archway, still stands as a handsome historic landmark in Newbliss.

William Lyons also was listed in Griffith's Valuation of 1860-1861 with a farm at Drumbaragh in Aghabog parish, under landlord Lord Rossmore. This would be the farm that his father Alexander Lyons held at the time of the Tithe Applotments in 1833, and that was occupied by the "Widow Of Alexr Lyons" in 1838.

William Lyons represented Newbliss Presbyterian Church in session meetings, and belonged to a Christian Men's Society.

Lizzie's death, of consumption. in Newbliss was registered by her brother William in Clones, she a draper's daughter, - maybe 1882 too early for deaths!

His wife, Jane Lyons, and Mr William Teele{ likely born~ 1837} of Enniskillen were the executors. He leaves money to his daughter Maggie Teele of Sligo. William Thomas Lyons, was on the same Drumbaragh farm at the time of the 1901 census. There's no doubt that the same family was in the same place for generations. After WTL died in 1902, his widow Eleanor (Eakins) moved with their children to Monaghan town. They're buried in Newbliss Presbyterian Church Cemetery, as well. Alexander and his wife are probably buried there, but their headstones long gone. I think they probably DID have markers at one time, because they had the money to get headstones.

1901. When William's wife Jane died in Belfast in 1901, their son Henry had not been heard from, and she still held the money that had been left to Henry in his father's will of 1887.

Jane wrote that provisions were to be made for the "settlement of any legacies if any left unpaid at my death of the several sums left to my sons according to the will of their father my late husband Wm. Lyons of Newbliss."

She directed that Henry's money (if he did not show up within a reasonable time) be divided between "my other two sons, Alex Lyons at present in Australia and John Lyons at present in America."

This Lyons family extended their relationships and business dealings over the counties of Monaghan, Cavan, Sligo and Fermanagh, and even the city of Dublin. Their family tombstone in Newbliss Presbyterian cemetery reflects only a few names of a long County Monaghan lineage that spread -- like many families from Ireland -- to England, Australia, and the Americas.

The daughter, Maggie Teele, mentioned in William's Will, is shown below in 2 censuses. She had married James Teele, merchant, abode Sligo, on 24/4/1876 in Dublin. His father Christopher Teele, farmer; hers William Lyons, merchant. Witnesses were Elizabeth Lyons- Lizzie, her sister - & William Teele - his brother

Interestingly there was an epic lady called Aunty Belle that I used to see quite often when we lived in Chichester. She lived to 105 and had a daughter called Patricia. Her brother died very tragically in a fire and I remember that they still had all his remaining belongings stacked up in a room in their house. Her surname was Teele. She told me how Uncle Arnold ( her cousin presumably)( son of a James Lyons and father of Tim and Richard) used to come to stay with her when she was training as a radiographer in London. They used to go to the music hall.- Fi.

Dick seems to think she worked at the Middlesex Hospital as a radiographer. She had long red hair up in a bun.
Always neatly dressed in tweed skirts, cashmere twinsets and pearls. I remember going to her house quite often when
our James was a baby ( 1977) and I think she was still alive 1987 when we moved to Winchester as we visited her in
St Richards hospital after she had a hip replacement. I went to Patricia’s funeral in Chichester and Aunty Belle was
still alive then and I visited her in the Nursing home in West Wittering.
