A SUMMARY of the ANCESTORS
The vast majority of Pat's paternal ancestors lived and worked in the Stoke Potteries from way back, the 1850s, if not earlier
Patrick/Patsey Mahan, a labourer, was born in Ireland and likely arrived in Stoke, England 1852-1858 as a refugee from the potato famine. Name became anglicized and his Mann descendants worked in the potteries, then turned to painting and mining .
The family of Patrick Mahan's wife, Mary Hannah Copestake, originated in Derbyshire but had migrated to busier Stoke by 1845
James Mann's wife, Sarah Jane Jones, was born Stoke to Edward Jones, miner, born to, Richard Jones, a miller, in Pontesbury, Shropshire, where Richard also was born & died . Thus a movement of the Jones family from Shropshire to the grime of Stoke in the 1860s.
And the family of Ada Birks, who married James Mann jnr, had been in Stoke since 1822 at least . All working in the Potteries
Pat's maternal ancestors though were nearly all from Northumberland, the vast majority of the miners
Henry Mcquillen, 1823, a mason, was in Lesbury in the north of Northumberland by 1849, but actually originated from Scotland, maybe Fife. Henry jnr, 1863, blacksmith, moved down to Amble by 1891, Edward, miner, in Lynemouth by 1920, when Pat's mother, Annie McQuillen was born . The wife of Henry 1863, Margaret I Finlay, was a schoolteacher, daughter of a ship's engineer, he in turn being the son of school teachers
The Sandersons originated around Berwick, being in Norham, on the border with Scotland, by 1790 with the birth of John Sanderson, a miner. They too moved south with each generation, John Dunn Sanderson, also a miner, being in Chevington by 1881. His son, George Sanderson, also a miner, married Tynemouth but was back in Chevington by 1911. Isabella Sanderson was baptised in Chevington in 1900
All the wives of these McQuillens & Sandersons were also born and bred in Northumberland
