SUMMARY

Michael Sander's and his siblingsancestors on his paternal side are more illustrious than most! The Sander name has been synonymous for nearly 150 years with Sanders’ Orchids and the once famous orchid nurseries in St Albans, and Bruges . His great grandfather, Heinrich Friedrich Sander, arrived in England from his native Bremen aged 18, around 1865, probably following the German victory over Denmark in the Schleswig-Holstein wars. By 1884 his nurseries were established in St Albans, and by 1894 in Bruges. In a famous edition of Punch he was christened “The Orchid King”.

Heinrich Friedrich Sander married the daughter of a successful merchant, James Fearnley, (son of a corn dealer & coal merchant). It was Fearnley money that was to help the establishment of a seed nursery, then an Orchid Nursery, in St Albans.

His son, Conrad Fearnley Sander, married Freda, a daughter of Benjamin Waugh, a Yorkshireman, a Congregational Minister, founder of the NSPCC,

Benjamin was the son of a saddler, James Waugh, & grandson of a Dissenting Independent Minister (another Benjamin Waugh). He married a daughter of Samuel Boothroyd, a self-made man, a draper in Southport: Samuel's father was also an Independent Minister, and son of a humble shoemaker.  Samuel married a daughter of the Rev. George Greatbatch, from Staffordshire, also the son of a Minister.

Michael’s father, David Sander, 1911, was truly an orchid expert, and came to be known as “The Orchid Prince.”

Michael’s maternal ancestors were involved in less exotic or reformist occupations: his mother, Barbara M. Massey Davies, was the daughter of a bank representative, Thomas Davies, the son of a Master Mariner, David Davies, born in Cork, and who ran a Boarding House in Bournemouth in his retirement.
He had married Sarah Conoley, daughter of a painter & plumber, Cornelius Conoley, but with a mariner as her maternal grandfather, John W Scott.

Barbara's maternal grandfather, Albert Massey, was a very successful Timber Merchant, born to an agricultural labourer, Charles Massey, also son of an agricultural labourer, who later made good as a Timber Merchant in St Albans. Albert married a daughter of an architect/surveyor, Frederick Smith, who was the son of a coal agent's clerk. And Frederick married a daughter of a grocer, James Platt. All these people, the Davies from Poplar & before that Cork, the Conoleys from Limehouse/Poplar & before that Ireland, the Smiths & the Platts from Blackburn, the Masseys in Barnet/St Albans, but from Gloucestershire, and before that London, have their own stories of upward mobility to tell..
