Johann Friedrich Christoph Sander
husband, citizen and “Leibzüchter” (retired farmer) in Lauenstein
79 years, 3 months, 10 days old

Obviously Johann Friedrich Christoph Sander inherited the farm of Johann Henrich (Heinrich Sander). The term “Leibzüchter” was only used for a farmer who had handed over the farm or at least most of it to his son (or another successor) and lived on the so called “Leibzucht”. This could have been a kind of granney annex to the house or an extra small house close to the main house. But a number of the “Leibzüchter” just kept on living in the house of their sucessor after the term mainly meant that a “Leibzüchter” still owned a certain share of the farm or at least got some fruits/crops/profit from the farm.

1852 Census

House Number 12 (p. 94 backside)
Friedrich Sander, Köthner                     46 years old
his wife Hanna                                       41 years old
his daughter Hanna                                18 years old
his daughter Maria                                 8 years old
his son Friedrich                                     14 years old
his son Heinrich                                     12 years old
Conrad Sander, “Böttcher” (cooper)     27 years old
Justine Sander, “Leibzüchterin”            64 years old, widow

The four children who are listed for Friedrich Heinrich Anton Sander were born about 1834, 1838, 1840 and 1844.
Conrad Sander (* about 1825) had the same profession as your ancestor Ernst Friedrich Conrad Sander in Bremen. This Conrad probably was a younger half-brother of Ernst Fririch Conrad and Friedrich Heinrich Anton Sander.
Finally we have the widow and “Leibzüchterin” (retired farmer`s wife) Justine Sander. She should be the widow of Friedrich Sander (Johann Heinrich Friedrich Sander) although the parish registers told us that the name of Friedrich`s second wife was Marie Sophie Christine (nee Schmalkuche).

Information on Lauenstein :

The town had a magistrate and some self-government rights. The citizen status (for which a certain fee had to be paid) usually was only given to the owners of the citizen houses in the town and there were a number of non-citizen inhabitants in the town as well. In 1791 Lauenstein had 74 citizen houses, but probably already about 700-800 inhabitants all in all (there were inhabitants of smaller houses and a lot of people/families who lived in the houses/aprtments of other people as renters). In 1852 Lauenstein and Damm together (another nearby “Flecken”, connected with Lauenstein later on) had 132 houses and 999 inhabitants.
