This may explain what my mother was doing when she had to leave the civil service where she worked as a switchboard operator when she got married and had me. I understand everyone had to do something. If not signed up to the forces, then working in munitions or in the WRVS. Is the W V S something to do with that. I know Mum never worked after she had me until my father died. She played tennis in the Summer and badminton in the Winter. She did dressmaking classes and shopping for neighbours. Only in old age did she play bridge. I spoke to a friend of hers last week who is about my age. She said Mum never talked about the past or my Dad only about me and general things. Though she was very proud when Brother Fred was made Mayor of Kensington! Christine told me Mum first worked in the Trueform offices where she met Christine. It seems they both went home for dinner and walked some of the way together and the friendship blossomed! Mum then did the accounts at the high class(!!!!) ladies outfitters Smiths, in St Giles Street. Then at about retirement age she was asked by a neighbour if she would help with the accounts at his Bingo club(coming down in the world now!) . She worked there til he realised she was 70 and said she had to go. Bad arthritis took over after she gave up sports and constant painkillers caused a bad stomach ulcer. She struggled on until she collapsed at home and was taken into a home. It was dreadful. We brought her back here but it wasn’t long before she died. She always said she would not live with us and I think she gave up. Be interesting to know what she did in the war. Are there any records anywhere
