Henry Bowman Mycock 1795-1847

Henry Bowman was not born in Middlesex- did he come from Hartington Derbyshire ? . This was where his childrens' aunt, Mary Maxwell, who became their guardian after his death in 1847 , was born ~ 1795. Was there a Henry Mycock born Hartington ~1797? Yes, a Henry Mycock was baptised to Joseph Mycock & Hannah 16/1/1795 Hartington, as was a Mary Mycock in 1792.

I have found a Mary Mycock baptised 12/12/1792 in Hartington to Joseph & Hannah Mycock- think she probably became this Mary Maxwell by marriage- but marriage not on IGI . Explained the name but not how she was related to Henry Bowman until I found that a Henry Mycock was also baptised to these parents in 1795. They were brother & sister . Now the only mystery is why he abandoned the Mycock name when he moved to London??

But, EUREKA!, Joseph Mycock married Hannah Bowman on 4/6/1787 Earl Sterndale Derby & this is why Henry chose to be known as Henry Bowman once he decided to shake off the Mycock name!!! - baptisms & marriage on IGI. Earl Sterndale~5 m NNW of Hartington

1821 On 19/9/1821 Henry Bowman, of Clerkenwell, married Elizabeth Mary Bailey,of St Leonard Shoreditch, a minor, father Thomas Bailey- who gave consent- in Clerkenwell St James, Islington. One of the witnesses was Thomas Bailey. All 3 seemed capable of writing their names- Ancestry London marriages

They had the following children baptised to them: Matilda 1823 at Clerkenwell St James, father server drapery? , Edward 1826 at Lambeth St. Mary , father shopman, Charles Thomas & Henry Joseph 1828, father woollen draper, address Rodney Court, Elizabeth Rebecca 1833, father Dyer, address Long Alley, Mary Ann 1835 , father fur dyer, address Wilson Street, Hannah Maria 1836 , father dyer of White Cross Place, George 1837, father fur dyer of White Cross Place, Sarah 1838, father fur dyer of White Cross Place & William 1838 father fur dyer of White Cross Place- the last 8 all at Shoreditch St Leonard

Thus Henry started as a skin/fur dyer around 1833, before that working in shops.

1840 Shoreditch Mar 1840 2 372 . Clara Bowman was born to Henry Bowman & Elizabeth Mary . She was baptised to them on 17/2/1840 in the Albion Chapel Presbyterian Church, City of London. Shoreditch was in Mddx until 1889 . Have her b.c.and she was born on 17/2/1840 to Henry Bowman, skin dyer, & Elizabeth Mary Bailey at 1 Whitecross Place, Wilson Street

 

1841C. Henry Bowman, 40, skin dyer, is living White Cross Place, St Leonard Shoreditch, Tower Hamlets with his wife & 7 children born 1826-1840 . By this time they had had at least 11 children- Matilda & Edward may have left ome, ut likely Hannah & Sarah had died. From the ages shown here it seems the children were sometimes up to 8 years old when baptised ! Also a Nicholls family in the house.

1842. Another daughter Alice Bowman was born and was baptised as Alace Bowman in the same church as Clara on 22/6/1842. None of the elder Bowman children, ~1826-1835, were baptised in this church

1843. Elizabeth Mary Bowman died Shoreditch Dec 1843.No burial found

1847 Henry Bowman died Shoreditch Mar 1847, buried Bunhill Fields Burial Ground, City Road, 11/1/1847, aged 49 yrs, body brought from Wilson Street Finsbury- Ancestry. This indicates a 1796/7 birth

1851C. Clara Bowman Mycock & Alice Bowman Mycock are living with an aunt in Manchester. Cannot find his other children: the only one I might have found is George, but cannot be certain . Reckoned the surname Mycock must have been bestowed by this aunt - no Mycock indication in their humble Shoreditch upbringing - but now know this was Henry's actual surname !
