Emily Trelfer 1874-1943

I wonder if she knew that not only her father & grandfather, but also 2 greatuncles spent long periods in the Brighton Workhouse, likely dying there.

1881C. Emily Trelfer at 6 Barrowcliffe Cottages Brighton with parents George, 24, jeweller, Emily 24 laundress & siblings Nelly & Amelia , all b. Brighton. her future husband, John Smith, was living at 3 Barrowcliffe Cottages in this census.

1891C. Almost certain she is Emily Trelfer, 17, mistranscribed as Trager!, working in Hove as a domestic servant

1891C. She is missing from the family at 1 Boss Garden Brighton. 3 more siblings have been born 1882-1889. Also living with them is George Hayllar, Emily's maternal grandfather.

1899. Emily Trelfer married John Smith Dec 1899 Brighton . According to family legend, they actually met in Coventry!, but this now altered with the discovery that John's sister, also an Emily, was born in Coventry in 1862!

First child John Leslie Smith was born Mar 1900 Brighton .

1901C Emily Smith, 26, living 10 Foundry Street Brighton in 4 rooms with her husband & son . With 4 rooms, it seems odd that she did not take care of any of her younger siblings, Alice, & probably William & Queenie, who were in Brighton Workhouse with their father, George Trelfer.

1911C Emily Smith, 36, living 36 Redcross Street Brighton in 4 rooms with her husband & 3 children . She had been married 11 years, 4 children, all living

"Leonard didn't live long about 9 months from what we'd call probably a cot death today. John was known as Jack. Winifred Elsie Smith died young- actually in 1943! . She had a foot deformity. There was another sibling Doris born after the 1911C and she had a son whom she called Leonard, after her dead brother. Cousin Leonard is still alive and kicking and lives just outside Newhaven in Sussex"

Doris M Smith was born Brighton Jun 1913. She married 1936 Herbert Fuller & had a son Leonard, still alive in 2013.
