William McLellan 1793 - 1856
1793. Almost certainly his parents were Rodger Mclelland & Agnes Dunlop who married in Dundonald Ayr in 1784, he being baptised to them 10/2/1793 in Monkton & Prestwick, Ayr. Dundonald ~ 6 miles north of Monkton. This information obtained from his 1856 d.c.
1841C. Maybe William McLellan, aged 40, rounded down probably, cotton warehouseman, not b.Lanarkshire married to a Janet 45 b.Lanarkshire, living Broad Street, Barony. There is a marriage 1816 of William Clelland to Janet Cummins in Stonehouse Lanarkshire - FS
1841-1844 . Marriage to Ann Mason? She was unmarried and living Glasgow in 1841C. No marriage on FS . And only 2 Ann Mason marriages on SP are to completely different people. So, a possibility that William and Ann became partners but never legally married . Or could they have married in Ireland?? - but see no reason for this as both seem to be in Scotland in 1841. Not married in England either.
1844. Ann Clelland baptised to William Clelland & Ann Mason on 26/9/1844 - FS
1846. Helen McLellan baptised to William McLellan & Ann Mason on 17/4/1846 - FS
1848. Son William McLellan was baptised to parents William McLellan & Ann Mason Glasgow on 20/7/1848 - SP, not bought the full image as do not think it will give any more information. Also record not on FS!!
1851C. William McLellan, 55, is living 26 Savoy Street Calton Lanarkshire with his wife and 2 children
| William Mclellan | 55 | Warehouseman | b. Prestwick, Ayshire |
| Ann Mclellan | 33 | b. Ireland | |
| Ann Mclellan | 6 | b. Glasgow | |
| William McLellan | 3 | b. Glasgow |
1861C. Ann McLellan, 43, head, is living 37 Coalhill Street, Barony, Glasgow with 3 children . Only found on Ancestry! No, have now found it on FMP, mistranscribed as McLillan, and Ann McLillan is given as widow
| Ann McLellan | 43 | Head . . . Cotton Yarn Winder | b. Ireland |
| Annie McLellan | 16 | Cotton Yarn Winder | b. Glasgow |
| William McLellan | 12 | Cloth lapper | b. Glasgow |
| Thomas M McLellan | 4 | b. Glasgow |
William McLellan has died by 1861 as his wife, Ann Mclellan is a widow in 1861C . There is a Thomas Mclellan, 4 in that census:, the only two born 1856-57, both in High Church Glasgow, are to parents Samuel Mclellan & Margaret Stewart in1856 and Thomas Duff Mclellan to parents Andrew Mclellan & Mary Duff - on FS. So how does this Thomas age 4 fit in??. .
Since no deaths on SP 1856-1861, in Lanarkshire/Glasgow of a William Mclellan b. within 10 yrs of 1796, I bought a dc for a William Mclellan dying in Sandgate Street, Prestwick Ayr 17/2/1856- as he had been born Prestwick! I was initially very unsure on this.

He is a Warehouseman in Cotton Manufacturing, and just saying Married without naming the wife is very odd - suggesting a split?, not necessarily, have since seen similar d.c.s -, but, age, 65, is seemingly too old and date of 17/2/1856 precludes the 1857 Thomas being his son . Anyway, this dc also states he is the son of Roger Mclellan, woollen handloom weaver, & Agnes Dunlop. Informant is Hugh D McLellan, brother. Cause of death: paralysis, several months . Have looked up Roger Mclelland & Agnes Dunlop on FS and they married 1784 Dundonald Ayr and had Jean 1787, Mary 1790, Agnes 1795 & Agnes 1797: no William nor Hugh shown baptised to them, all Monkton Ayr,
But there is a Hugh Nesbit Mclellan, b,1807 Monkton, living Sandgate Street Prestwick Ayrshire in 1851C. Also still in Sandgate Street in the 1861C as Hugh D Mclelllan. Monkton not more than 2 km North of Prestwick. In SP, William Mcclelland was baptised to Rodger Mcclelland & Agnes Dunlop 10/2/1793, Monkton & Prestwick As well as the children shown in the previous paragraph, this couple also had Thomas 1785 & Rodger 1800. So why no baptism of a Hugh? Looked up a William Mclellan b. within 5 yrs of 1795 living in Ayrshire in 1841C and could only find one, a shoemaker. So am convinced that this is the death of our man!
