John Owen apparently wrote books on quarrying.

At some point he must have moved a considerable way SE (75k) to the Bridgend area

About when does he die??

"Pat recalls going down to Bridgend to see Daddy's parents when she was about 3, so that would have been 1936 and Daddy's father died that year".

1936. John Owen, 76, dies Bridgend Sep 1936 - here age is ~5 years too young

1938. A John Owen, 86, dies Bridgend Jun 1938 - here age is ~2 years too old, but not if born in 1852, which 1891C suggests. Think this more likely- Pat would still have been well under 5 . No probate for him around either of these 2 dates
