Edward McQuillen in WW1

Private 173624, & also 137324

There are at least 30 pages of damaged records for him- I have just extracted 8 of the clearer pages below. . Basically he was 18 yrs 216 days when he emlisted in Newcastle on 11/11/1917. Then called up for service on 6/5/1918. Gave his occupation as Blacksmith - though I think he was already a miner,- previous employer was Broomhill Coal - but that occupation would likely have led to his rejection, as too many miners had enlisted and there was a shortage of coal to power the ships - father was Henry McQuillen of 51 Gordon Street Amble . Mother given on another form as Margaret. He was 5ft 7 ", had dark hair, grey eyes and a fresh complexion.

Was posted at Rugely Notts. Deprived 10 days pay on one occasion for being 3 days late reyturning from leave On 8/5/1918 he was posted to 87yh T R B 4th Battn NGE Then on 29/8/1918 was compulsorily transferred to No 4 Battn M G Corps Clipstone Transferred to Class Z Army Reserve on demob 11/1/1919. Miner is mentioned for his former work . Wished to be a Blacksmith on discharge

One of the pages is a Court Martial form - but any words in ink that had been on it have completely faded
