Mary Ann White 1843-1933
Born 1843/4 St Pancras, Mddx. - from her sole appearance in a census, that of 1881 - to Father White
She could be one of 3 births: 2 Jun 1843, but the second one can presumably be ruled out
1.one of whom was baptised 27/8/1843 to George Henry & Sarah, he a jeweller, address Phillips Buildings: she in a Warren Ancestry tree, family in 1851 & 1861C, no husband given , the most likely!
2. the second likely born to Robert & Rebecca, baptised 4/6/1843 Albany Street, marries Frederick Adams Pancras 1872 - Hume Ancestry family tree
3. and the third born 11/2/1844 and baptised to Charles & Kate, he a porn dealer, address Old Street, St Pancras
1863/4. A Jeanette Hutchinson was reputedly (1911C) born at Nottingham Place,( this Marylebone) London, but no entry on bmd , to Frederick Hutchinson ( from her 1908 m.c) of the Indian Civil Service. He seemingly only 15 in 1863!- maybe 2 Frederick Hutchinsons being confused here!
But!, there is a Jeanette White born Clerkenwell Dec 1862 and subsequently a marriage of Mary Ann White to Frederick Hutchinson Portsea I. Jun 1868
So I think Mary Anne White had a daughter,Jeanette, in 1862 who assumed the name of her stepfather in 1868, namely Hutchinson
Mary Ann White / Hutchinson "married", 1876-1877, Jamsetji Jivanji Gazdar, but not legally - not in England, Scotland or Ireland, and have not found on the Indian Fibis site - Mary Ann's surname obtained from 1877 b.c. of son James
Photo of Mary Anne found by Nigel in 2020
1876. Mary Gazdar born to Jamsetji & Mary A - but no BMD/Ancestry birth entry!!-(they likely did not register the birth) , and she likely died 1881-1901?,""another daughter died aged about 9 and is buried in Wales"- Nigel. Bmd has death of a Mary May Gazdar Pwllheli Sep 1891 aged 15 and have now found- FMP, not on Ancestry! - a Mary Gazdar ,15, in 1891C , as a visitor in the Rectory Bottwny, Plasgwyn, Bottwnog, Pwllheli, Caernarvonshire. She died from TB- she must have been convalescing on the Lleyn Peninsular. -Nigel. Nigel once visited her grave in Bytwnog/Butternog. Nothing in FMP Newspapers. Seemingly not on Findagrave site
There is a birth of a Mary Hutchinson Marylebone Jun 1876

The photo in a locket, passed down to Nigel Gaspar, was thought to be her. Likely ~ 1870 . . . .The later photo maybe ~ 1905: Nigel has the clasp, photo centre
But I feel this could be Elsie Heard, b.1889., shown in the photo on the right
1877. James Gazdar born Marylebone Dec 1877 to Jamsetji & Mary A at 8 Abbey Terrace .
1879. Gertrude Gazdar born 26/6/1879 Marylebone Sep 1879 to Jamsetji & Mary A . B.c.on her page . Married Harry Forrester Hampstead Sep 1920 . Seemingly no children
1881C .Jamsetji Gazdar, 37, barrister, is living Rendisham House Cheshunt Herts with wife Mary A, his first 3 children and 3 servants. A Rendlesham Hall was like a stately home!

Gertie, Mary & James ~1882
1883. Maud Gazdar born 6/12/1882( from 1897 baptism record)- bmd reg. 1883 - to Jamsetji & Mary A. Married John F Taylor Saffron Walden Dec 1928.
1885-1890 . In London Directories at 3 New Square, Lincoln's Inn
1889. His step daughter?? Jeanette van Alstine is living in 4 Harley Road on 30/8/1889 - his residence from 1890-1896
1890. Mr Gazdar advertises for a valet , has an inability to walk
1890-1896 . Jamsetji Jivanji Gazdar is living 4 Harley Road, Hampstead- Ancestry Electoral registers
but not found in 1891C . But his daughter Mary, 15, was in Wales
1891. Her daughter, Mary/May , aged 15, buried in Bottwnog on 1/8/1891. She apparently died of TB.
1894-5. Her husband returned to Bombay according to Lincoln's Inn letter . On the Counsel in the High Court of Bombay until 1913 at least- lists end then!
'Children lived with Mrs Mossop while his wife was in India with him. His wife just returned to England for the school hols. Mrs ? lived Vyne Cottage, Uxbridge ' - Nigel, from his aunt Emilie/Jean. I think she meant Mrs Jeanette Van Alstine as she was thus called in their school days: she only became Mrs Mossop in 1908
1897. Gertrude, 18, & Maud, 14,were baptised in St Mary's Kilburn on 11/5/1897- London baptisms Ancestry . No baptism for Mary & James, but Mary had died Pwiheli, Sep 1891, aged 15 . Father a barrister, address 136 Belsize Road
So, seemingly, JJ kept a base in London
1890s . His Times obituary claims he went out to India in the early 90s, he practiced for a time at Bombay High Court, and then for some years as Judicial Councillor of Bhavnagar State . He worked for the Gaekwar of Baroda ( this west India, Bhavnagar State in the East!) - Nigel
1900. & on retirement in 1900, he returned & settled at Fox Hall - I am dubious about the date 1900!, likely only lived there fairly continuously from ~1909/1914.
1901C. Neither she nor her husband to be found- thus almost certainly back in India. But her student daughters are living 5 Canfield Gardens Hampstead with a step sister, Jeanette van Alstine, aged 38. Have not found son James Henry, then 23.
1909. J J Gazdar on a ship's passenger list, travelling from Bombay to London, in July 1909 - Ancestry
1911C. Her husband and youngest daughter are living at Fox Hall, Upminster, Essex. Where is she?_ I think she is the Mary Anne Hutchinson listed here. Has she already become manic and retired to a seaside hotel- Southend/Westcliff on Sea?? Have done wildcard searches for an 1842-4 born St Pancras. She could well have reverted to being Mary Ann White by now . James Henry and Gertrude are to be found, in other London households, he an Engineer, she a medical student. Mary Anne Hutchinson almost certainly the mother of Jeanette Mossop/van Alstine/Hutchinson

.
1914. Her husband probably returned from Bombay to England
1920. Her daughter Gertrude married an assistant school teacher, 8 years her junior.
Sadly, the family became increasingly dysfunctional, as they say. JJ cut Gertrude out of his will, supposedly disapproving of her marriage, but I wonder now if it wasn't about her surgical work for the somewhat notorious Louisa Garret Anderson -Nigel
1922. Jamshedi J Gazdar, 76, dies Romford Sep1922 . Times obituary - see his page
He left~£4200, including £100 for his gardener, Webber, if he were still in his employment on his death! - Chelmsford Times He leaves £500 to a lady friend, Jessie Percival-Hall. and only refers to the mother of his children (never his wife) who he suggests should be paid £300 /annum . His Will
He was cremated at Manor Park
1933. Mary A Gazdar and Mary A White - 2 entries on bmd, but Mary Ann White otherwise Gazdar in the actual d.c, 90, died in the Meteor Nursing Home, Genesta Road, Westcliff on Sea. on 12/2/1933 Rochford Mar 1933. She was an Annuitant, spinster, of Winton Hall Hotel, Westcliff on Sea . Informant was Gertrude Forrester, daughter of 30 Brigadier Hill Enfield . No probate found
1931 Photo of the Winton Hall Hotel- mow divided into flats
I knew little of JJ's wife, not even her name; she was the 'spit' of my mother[ her granddaughter, Mary Gazdar 1915] from a photo I once saw, and was somewhat manic in old age -Nigel
