John Williams 1851-1907
Mariner. Born Llanfair-is-gaer/ Port Dinorwic to a master mariner . Parents seemingly Owen & Jane Williams . Master baker in retirement years
Found on the web 16/4/2017, this translation- asked for by one Kelly Jones using FaceBook - of a gravestone:
In memory of the children of John & Catherine Williams of Helen Terrace, Portdinorwic. Owen who died 17/07/1878, age 1 year 7 months. Hugh Elias who died 16/05/1886, age 4 years 5 months. Also, the above, Captain John Williams, born 07/05/1851 died 12/03/1907. Also, Catherine Williams, above, who died 03/06/1936, age 82 years.
1851. According to the 1907 obituary of Capt. John Williams, to be found on www.welshmariners.org. uk, " me to St Mary, Llanfairisgaer, Cae born 7/5/1851, died 12/3/1907". This confirmed by the translation of the gravestone above
a John Williams born Nevin 4/7/1851 gains his Masters Certificate in 1888 - Nefyn ~ 30 k SW of Carnarvon .
1851. John Williams born, 7/5/1851, to Owen Williams and Jane Williams, b. Nevin Only 1 birth registered Pwllheli Jun 1851 27 402 , so, ignoring the 1901C that states he was born Port Dinorwic- suspect- it might be worth buying this - but would only confirm d of b. Have checked on the GRO site-2017 allows a new option with the mother's surname - that a John Williams was indeed born with a mother Williams in Pwlheli 1851 but this in the Sep qtr: this feasible if they delayed 2 months in registeriing the birth- so correct ref is in fact Pwllheli Sep 1851 27 368
1861C.John Williams, 9, was living Tan y Maes, Nevin, Pwllheli with his mother, 3 younger siblings & a servant.
| Jane | Williams | Head | Married | Female | 39 | 1822 | Master Mariners Wife | Ceidio, Caernarvonshire, Wales | |

There are baptisms in Nevin 1853-1861 for Ellen, William & Hugh Williams to Elias Williams and Jane- could the 1874 mc father given as Owen be incorrect! Could John's father actually be Elias- he does call a son Henry Elias in 1892, but then he calls his 1st son John Owen!!
1871C. ?? Already at sea. Search for the rest of his family
Mariner certificates shown, below- may be his . There are other certs for a John Williams born Nevin 4/7/1851- and from IGI his parents were Elias and Jane , so he is NOT our John Williams
1874. A John Williams of Tan y Maes, [ as in 1861C] marries Catharine Hughes Llanddeiniolen on 2/9/1874. His father Owen Williams, hers John Hughes - FMP Caernarvonshire marriages
This the logical marriage: before 1875 when Mary Williams alledgedly born, and in Catherine's birthplace, Llanddeiniolen, and, most convincingly, he of Tan y Maes . Thus his parents would seem to be an Owen and a Jane- but this conflicts with my suppositions that he is Elias!!. and that his mother maybe Ann- from 1891C.
[1876. a John Williams marries Catherine Hughes Bangor Dec 1876 . This m.c would give both fathers : also John's occupation -not on FMP, Ancestry, FS nor IGI. But this now irrelevant as the 1874 Tan y Maes marriage must be the correct one ]
1876/7. Son Owen Williams born: dies 17/07/1878, age 1 year 7 months
Yarnold tree has 5 Mariner certs for John Williams, but do not think they are his- continuation of one has birth 1852
1881C. His wife, Catherine Williams, is living 10 Allun Terrace, Port Dinorwic, Llanfair is Gaer. John 1852 missing - at sea . Cannot find him lodging in Liverpool

1881/2. Son Hugh Elias Williams born; dies 16/5/1886, aged 4 years 5 months
1883. His address given as Rhent Tydweiliog on 14/8/1883, birth 1851 Nevin, when he, a John Williams!, gets his First Mates Certificate : Tudweiliog some 10k SW of Nevin, nowhere near Port Dinorwic!
1884. Catherine Ellen Williams born 8/9/1884 to John & Catharine . She had a twin brother, William Robert Williams . Dofb from 1939 register

1886, Griffith Richard Williams born Allun Terrace 24/11/1886
1891C .His wife, Catherine Williams, is living Allun Terrace, Port Dinorwic, Llanfair is Gaer. All born Llanfair is Gaer. John 1852 missing - at sea

1894. Henry Elias Williams born
1901C. John Williams, 49, retired mariner, is living 6 Allun Terrace, Port Dinorwic, Llanfair is Gaer. Born Port Dinorwic- this ODD for the John Williams I have traced is of Nevin!!, but birthplaces often wrong in the censuses
| John | Williams | Head | Married | Male | 49 | 1852 | Retired Mariner | Port Dinorwic Caernarvonshire, Wales | |
| Catherine | Williams | Wife | Married | Female | 47 | 1854 | - | Llanddeiniolen, Caernarvonshire, Wales | |

| Ann | Williams | Daughter | Single | Female | 81 | 1820 | - | Tremadog, Caernarvonshire, Wales |
Who is Ann Williams, single, born 1820? She, plus the 2 youngest children, only speak Welsh . She could possibly be a daughter , aged 18, but do not think so as not in 1891C and Tremadog a long way from Port Dinorwic
1901-1907 . John Williams becomes a Master Baker- like his son Griffith Richard Williams 1886 is by 1911. The family move from Allun Terrace to Cambrian Villas, "a large house on the top of the hill with a bakehouse"

I am assuming this is he- from Joslyn tree
1907. John Williams, 56, master baker, of Cambrian Villa, Port Dinorwic dies 12/3/1907 Carnarvon - probate of £296. . No burial on FMP. If age correct, mplies born April 1851-Feb 1852

Death certificate states that he died of a Strangulated Hernia, 5 days, operation 7 days, and Cardiac Exhaustion . Informant was William Robert Williams, son, present at death, same address - Yarnold tree.
www.welshmariners.org. uk, " me to St Mary, Llanfairisgaer, Cae. Capt. John Williams, born 7/5/1851, died 12/3/1907
Cannot find a newspaper account of his death- FMP does not seem to cover Wales with its newspapers.
1911C. Catherine Williams, 57, widow, is living in 7 rooms at Cambrian Villa, Port Dinorwic, Llanfair is Gaer. 9 children, 2 dead
| Catherine | Williams | Penteulu | Gweddw | Female | - | 57 | 1854 | Carnarvon Llanddinden | |

| Henry Elias | Williams | Mab | Sengl | Male | - | 18 | 1893 | Carnarvon Port Dinorwic |
1936 Catherine Williams, dies

The 4 certificates above almost certainly irrelevant.
In 1901C, Ann Williams 81 is interesting, Original definitely states Single and 81! Could she be John's mother or a maiden aunt?? Tremadog 30-40 k SSE of Carnavon
She is likely in 1891C, in Dinas, Llanfair is Gaer, widow, place of birth illegible, Pentrefach??. with a son, William Williams, 40,sailor, b. a different, illegible, county
In 1881C, Anne Williams, widow, Dinas, Llanfair is Gaer, born Llanllyfni-~10 k S of Carnarvon, A Robert Williams, 31, also born Llanllyfni, next door
Have spent hours trying to track her back in the censuses- give up 22/1/2017 . But could she be a step mother, and the Catherine married to Owen in 18xx
In 1871C Anne Williams,49, b.Llanstymdwy, husband William, 49?, labourer, with son John, cowman,18, b. Llanfihangel , Morris 20, Elizabeth 15, Laura 12 & Anne 10, are living Llanllyfni
In 1861C, Llanfihangel & Pennant, Tremadoc . John b. Llanfihangel, Ann b. Llanstymdwy
|
BUT, this William & Ann in 1881C with John 8, quarryman and Elizabeth 25- so seemingly not the same Ann as I have, widowed, in 1881C!! But definitely the 1871C family
In 1851C, Anne Williams, 32, b. Llandwrog, William, farmer, 33, b. Llanllyfni, Martha , Ann & Owen, 4,2 & 1 ,are living Llanllyfni NO?
1861C. ?? Penllyn, Llandeiniolen???
