Joseph Phillips 1815- 1893

Born Moreton/Adminstone- the latter near Athelhampton,Puddleton,~4 k NW of Moreton

From a humble beginning- given as a labourer on his 1843 m.c.- he became a Grocer and amassed £16990 by his death!

1813-mc

1815. a Joseph Phillips baptised Moreton 25/5/1815 to Joseph Phillips & Mary Sheppard ( Also a baptism Thorncombe, Dorset on 15/11/1815 to Thomas & Susannah) - FMP Dorset Baptisms. Moreton ~12 k E of Dorchester where a Joseph Phillips had married Mary Clark: but I do not think this -shown above - is the correct marriage

I am confident that this is the marriage of our Joseph's parents, in Cheselbourne in 1808

Parents Joseph Philps and Mary Sheppard had wed in Cheselbourne on 10/5/1808 , Martha Sheppard a witness- sister? Cheselbourne~13 k S of Okeford Fitzpaine & ~16 k N of Moreton . And son Joseph 1815 called his son Joseph Sheppard Phillips

Logically his parents must include Mary Sheppard

1841C.. Maybe the Joseph Philps, 23, in Okeford Fitzpaine . No occupation given

Mary Philps Female 91 1750 Dorset, England independent
Anthony Philps Male 60 1781 Dorset, England yeoman
Joseph Philps Male 23 1818 Dorset, England
Martha Philps Female 50 1791 Dorset, England
Edward Philps Male 10 1831 Dorset, England
Mary Percy Female 19 1822 Dorset, England

The Martha here is Martha May Sheppard who married Simon Phillips 1783-1837. so thought must be our Joseph Phillips, as he calls a son Joseph Sheppard Phillips in 1850

. But now I am convinced his mother was a Mary Sheppard, and likely Martha & Mary were sisters .

1843 . Joseph Phillips marries Temperance Phillips Sturminster Sep 1843. She has a sister, Sarah, who marries a Benjamin Phillips in 1844 - but in 1868, the widowed Joseph marries the widowed Sarah. Witnesses Benjamin Phillips & Sarah Phillips: Benjamin a cousin, removed , of Temperance( see family chart on Temperance's page) who marries her sister, Sarah, in 1844
