Richard's father, Alan A Manners, 1937, never knew his biological father, John Edward Henry Manners, 1915. The latter was born in London to a Chilean mother, Mercedes Inostroza, who had only just arrived in England, having had 4 other children previously in Santiago, the father, James Herbert Manners, being a civil engineer born & working in Argentina. His presumed father, one James Manners, ~1850, also a civil engineer, was seemingly also born in Argentina. So who was the first Manners to go out to Argentina and where did they originate from?

Alan's parents divorced in 1938 and his mother, Ruth Joan Catley, obtained custody: but then had little to do with his upbringing, this being left to her mother & sister, Audrey, who adopted Alan after her 1949 marriage
The Catleys were comfortably off farmers, then builders, from Midsomer Norton, Somerset, they having been there since 1800 or earlier. James Catley, 1757 -1831, lived & died in Chilcompton , this very nearby. Aubrey W J Catley, 1832, married a butcher's daughter, Amelia Gait

Ruth Catley's mother was Annie Parkes. She, born  Canton,1868,  came from a line of Wesleyan ministers/missionaries: her father working out in Canton for 20 years, her grandfather having been a missionary in the West Indies. Two of her brothers also became ministers, and her sister, Mary 1877, was an ancestor of Rick Stein's!. Before the zeal set in, John Parkes 1807 was a whitesmith in Derby and his father, Marmaduke Parkes, came from Dundee, Scotland ( but no trace of him there!) . Her mother, Annie Wilson, 1843, came from West Bromwich, where her father & grandfather were iron & coach smiths

The paternal ancestors of Richard's mother, Ann C Collins, were Somerset farmers back through several generations . Her paternal ancestors, the Phillips, were farmers in Okeford Fitzpaine, Dorset, for 2 generations: before that, grocers in the same place . Two of Ann's gggrandmothers, Temperance Phillips 1816 & Sarah Phillips, 1823, were sisters, both baptised in Okeford Fitzpaine. And the Hales and the Brocks were in Priddy, Somerset, back through generations

Interesting occupations discovered on the maternal side include a thatcher & a mole catcher amongst the farmers, grocers, builders and agricultural labourers

Places Richard should certainly visit would be the graveyards of Priddy, Okeford Fitzpaine, Chilcompton & Midsomer Norton . And a trip to Mendoza, Argentina could reveal more about those Manners
