1898 .Her husband, Ralph Downing, dies suddenly Wolstanton Sep 1898, stated age 45 . No probate

Found 3 obituaries on FMP, but in the most informative one the print had faded!: he had been headmaster of the Silverdale Board schools for almost 20 years; his passion was cricket, playing for Silverdale and being Chairman of the North Staffordshire Cricket League; he was vice president of the Silverdale Conservative club, says he left a widow and 5 children

 

After Ralph´s death, Alice had the remaing 3 children, then aged 6-15, baptised

1898 Cecil Downing, born 9/5/1886, & Ralph Downing, born 22/9/1883[ this incorrect as he was reg in the Jun qtr] , were baptised Silverdale St Luke 8/11/1898 father Schoolmaster, address West Terrace.

. Ladye Bette Downing was baptised there 13/11/1898 .

1911C. Alice Downing, 55, assistant teacher, is living in 5 rooms at 35 Louise Street, Burslem , Staffs with all her 4 children: census entry states 4 children, all alive . . The 3 teachers were working for Stoke on Trent Education Authority . Interesting that there is no occupation for Cecilia- she is thought to have been a nun, but had to had to give it up due to macullar degeneration .

1939 register. Odd that I cannot find her, or Cecil. Ralph, a corporal in the N Staffs Reg. in WW1, married in 1918, is head teacher of a junior council school in Thornton Cleveleys with his wife and a son, another Ralph Downing , born 1921 .- Brennan Ancestry tree, but seemingly unconnected!! Her other 2 daughters are living Christchurch

1942. Alice J Downing dies Hendon Mar 1942, stated age 86.. Her grandson Cyril Ford Jones 1921 would likely have known her very well.
