John Fitzgerald 1919 - 2012
Known as Jack
Born 27 Mount Sion Avenue; later lived ShortCourse ~1922-1928 at least ; Mount Sion Avenue again by 1945 ; 11 St Alphonsus Road 1947-1979- all these in Waterford - then moved to Roselawn, Tramore
1919. John Fitzgerald was born to John P Fitzgerald , tailor, & Catherine Delandre on 24/1/1919 at 27 Mount Sion Avenue, Waterford

He was the second child, wedged in between three sisters: Ellen 1916, Catherine 1921 and Margaret 1924 .
1921-1924. The family moved from Mount Sion Avenue to Shortcourse, where his mother was running the grocery shop in Shortcourse, run by Maggie Maher/Grant 1845 and his wife's elder sister, Mary Delandre, in 1911C. But her sister died in 1923, so this likely when the family moved
Nick - look online and download the photo of a house in Shortcourse nearest to what number 10 looked like . Also need photos pf Mount Sion Ave, St Alphonsus Road . Monastery Street and Roselawn - PLEASE
1928. His mother died due to a miscarriage . So his father was left with 4 children aged 3-11
1945. . John Fitzgerald, 26, married Mary( Teasie) Fitzgerald 27, on 2/4/1945 in Tramore, Co Waterford. His address Mount Sion Avenue, Waterford: hers Convent Lodge, Tramore . His father John Fitzgerald, tailor; hers Martin Fitzgerald, gardener. Witnesses John Joe O'Meara. his best man, & Ellen Fitzgerald - his elder sister
How they met: their fathers had become friends- John P making suits for Martin; he would travel to Tramore to take measurements and young Jack accompanied him on one of these trips . They were friends by 1938 when Martin's daughter, Alice, married in Tramore. John P/Daddy Jack being a guest: see photo
Both occupations here are Incorrect- he was never a tailor, but a breadman .And Mary was not a shop assistant but an accounts clerk in the L&N (London & Newcastle) an important, and still extant (as Supermarkets) national grocery store chain

Jack’s wedding April 1945, taken outside the Lodge. Interesting to note the short dresses. No material available during the war. Jack’s suit, famously, was also a year old. The Best Man is John Joe O’Meara, whose family will feature in the Tramore clan data. The Bridesmaid is Nellie (Ellen), his big sister.
They had 4 children: Catherine/Kaye born Peter Street, July 1946, Elizabeth/Betty born March 1948, Nicholas born December 1949 and Gerard born July 1951, died 24/3/2000. The last three born St Alphonsus Road, Waterford.
So they must have started off by themselves in a flat in Peter Street, but then move back to the house in St Alphonsus Road where Jack's grandfather had lived 1909-1942 and was then inhabited by his father and step uncle Nicky, up to 1947
He loved his involvement with his colleagues as their Bakers’ Union representative and prided himself in achieving betterment of their circumstances. The bakery became easily the largest in Waterford. It afforded an unusual (for the times) amount of social and leisure activities to the employees
The house in St Alphonsus Road, , originally built in the 1890s of local stone, was of the two-up, two-down terraced variety. Small enough for a family of six, nevertheless others like it in the street accommodated many more. Additional accommodation was built on during the next 6-8 years before Jack was finally persuaded to buy the house.
1977. His wife , Teasie, died of cancer on ?? January xx?
Jack sold the house in St. Alphonsus Road about 1979, and bought a house in Roselawn in Tramore. At the time, Kaye had a grocery store in Tramore and Jack “helped out” there after he retired. He lived in Roselawn until he died. Gerry’s son, John, now lives there.
Maybe he would send you a photo of the house ?
