Christopher Shattock 1851- 1918

No Ancestry Trees - June 2015

1851. Christopher Shattock was born Bishops Lydeard Taunton Jun 1851 to parents George Shattock & Rachel Hearn. Probably on 17/5/1851- his 1871 police joining record gives him born 17/5/1850- to have them believe he was 21?!. He also maintained he was single on this - whereas he had married on 19/9/1870!

1871. He joined Glamorgan Constabulary on 24/4/1871, lying about his age & also that he was single when he had married Maria Roulan in 1870, having been a carpenter in the mines??.  I think he must have been disliked the mines as he would have been working with Welsh Speakers, and he needed to be 21 to join the Police Service. I do not see how he could have worked in the Welsh mines- still in Somerset in April 1871!

The Glamorgan Constabulary was originally organised into four districts:- Merthyr, Newbridge, Ogmore and Swansea. This arrangement continued until 1880 when the original four districts were re-organised into five divisions.
The 1880 reorganisation affected the Districts as follows:- The Merthyr District remained unchanged but was now designated the Merthyr Division. The Newbridge District lost some of its detachments and became the Pontypridd Division. The Ogmore District lost some detachments, acquired four detachments from the Swansea District and became the Bridgend Division. Apart from losing some detachments to Bridgend, the Swansea District whose headquarters had long been situated at Neath, remained substantially unaltered, but was now known as the Neath Division. A new Canton (later Barry Dock) Division was created out of those detachments removed from the former Newbridge and Ogmore Districts.
