1911C. Probably a barman, Fredrick Gosling, aged 24, b. Cardiff, in the Belle Vue Hotel, Merthyr Tydfil

1914-18. Obviously joined up , but know nothing - yet - about this .His numbers were, MAYBE, S/16031 1st Bn Rifle Brigade and then maybe 12th Rifle brigade dated 1919 (Roll of individuals entitled to medals) but that's it.Have just found something that tells new to try National Archives in Kew, tried that but seems to think that a lot of records we lost though bombing If he were the Frederick J Gosling below he did not serve in France before 1916- no 15 star medal . Also a record for the same name and army number, but as a Cprl, in the 3rd, 10th & 11th Bns!

Very odd that the same man, according to the number. 16031, has 2 seemingly different records!!

1918. Marries, aged 31, Ida M. Bushell, b.~1895, on 23/3/1918, occupation Soldier -Tamworth Mar 1918. Lesley has the m.c. Apparently Ida was a chronic asthmatic.

1920 Joan Beryl Gosling born 18/8/1920 at 6 Newport Road,  Trethomas, Bedwas, Cardiff. Sep 1920 Newport M. Father Frederick given as a coal haulier. Known as Beryl by 1927.

Could look up Electoral Rolls for Newport Road and find what period of time Frederick Gosling lived there.

Bedwas was where his brother Harold Ennis Gosling 1896 married Esther Shattock in 1921.

1927 . Frederick Gosling emigrates to Melbourne 20/9/1927 on the Beltana from London. Aged 41, an underground worker - coal miner? Was living 42 Hillside Terrace Bedwas, Newport.

Entry record, 13/11/1927, has him as a dairy farmer!.

Told the family that they would only hear from him if 'he made good': they never did. His son, Alan, was born on 5/5/1928 so his wife was about 4 months pregnant when they embarked

A discrepancy between being an underground worker and a dairy farmer!!

Ida's sister Gwen was already in Australia. Her future husband William Robins had been wounded in Belgium and was moved to England - Gwen and her friend went to the hospital to visit someone and that is where she meet Will.
Will returned to Australia [born there] and Gwen followed[ no passenger records for either of them 1918-1927 on Findmypast, but William would have returned probably on a troop ship]. Ida and Gwen's parents were deceased [ father 1906 & mother 1895- the year Ida was born], there was an elder brother but he had died aged 5 - & a second marriage for the father probably produced a girl.

From Electoral Rolls, 1931,1936, 1937, 1942, 1947, 1954 , Frederick Gosling seems to be living Wimmera Victoria 1931-1942, & Mallee Victoria 1947-1954. This odd - all the time at Red Cliffs? Maybe left Block 155 between 1943-1947 and moved into the centre of Redcliffs. Lesley - where were you born and where did you live 1943-1954?

His granddaughter Lesley thinks the family first lived at the Soldiers Settlement Yatpool - this ~6 km south of Red Cliffs; maybe where Block 155 was? Frederick was a labourer for a Mr West.. It was where Ida's sister, Gwendoline & her husband William Robins were living; they had come out to Australia earlier. Look them up on Electoral Rolls
Frederick James Gosling shows up as a Labourer in all census and Ida shows up as Home Duties, i.e. 1931, 1936, 1942, 1946?.  Their address reads:  c/- Block 155. Red Cliffs. [ A Block here refers to a piece of land allocated to returned soldiers: Frederick was a labourer for one of these ex soldiers, Mr West, and had accomodation on his land]

Vera Gwendoline Gosling appears in the 1947 Census living at c/- Block 155, Stewart and her occupation is home duties.

Where it stated that Vera lived c/- Block 155 Stewart.  -Stewart Road [ ? same as Calder Highway? or the Old Stewart school road?] is a long road that runs into Red Cliffs and her address should maybe read Red Cliffs rather than Stewart.

Have failed to find a map showing the Soldier Settlements which is what Block 155 would have been . Red Cliffs was a resettlement project for soldiers returning from WW1 & WW2. An Australian website exists for it :

1951. His wife, Ida May Gosling dies 24/5/1951. Red Cliffs. Aged 56. Probably at 78 Ilex Street - Lesley d.c??

1954   According to the 1954 Australian Electoral Roll Frederick James Gosling lived at 78 Ilex Street [this right in the centre of town], Red Cliffs and also lived with Alan John Gosling and Vera Gwendoline Gosling of the same address. Frederick is a labourer, VG is home duties and AJ is a storeman..

Apparently Frederick won a lottery with the 2 young West boys and was able to build his own house in the centre of Red Cliffs, at 78 Ilex Street and to buy a brand new Ford Prefect car. This probably ~1947, as this is when his Electoral Roll entry changes from Wimmera to Mallee.

After Ida died, Frederick remarried Eva Lillian Nelson on 29/4/1957 . His daughter Vera disapproved. She died 15/6/1989 at Red Cliffs. 1918-1989, so 32 years younger than Frederick

1974. Frederick James Gosling dies 12/6/1974 at Red Cliffs, Victoria. Aged 88. Red Cliffs is just over 13 kms from Mildura . Lesley has his d.c- he given as labourer

Ask Lesley to write her memories of him . He was very artistic, and used to do cross stitch embroidery.

Any of his possessions remained with his widow Eva and were thus lost to his Gosling descendants.

She had 4 children : Lesley Joan Bowen, 1943, - who married John Raeburn in 1962 & has 2 children- & another girl, Altona [ lives Hoppers Crossing, Melbourne, Victoria] , & 2 boys, Peter Gosling [ lives Koondrook, country Victoria] &. ? Gosling[ lives in Perth] .

2. Vera Gwendoline Gosling. Born 1922 Cardiff Wales. Still living, unmarried, with her father at 78 Ilex Street Red Cliffs in 1954. Married Albert Kenney and had a son Graham Kenney 1966. Died 26/10/2010

3. Alan John Gosling. Born in Victoria 5/5/1928 [thus conceived before they left Cardiff] . Died Novembr 1986. He never married but 'I believe he had 5 children 3 boys 2 girls 4 of us brought up together for some time. He is not listed on my bc as my father and my mother was married to halse at the time, I did not know this until I had to get my driving licence and needed bc# Jeff Halse : Jeffry Gosling/Halse??- have contact with him oct 2020- 1962 whose mother was Marian, then Kenneth Gosling Jan 1967, Leanne Gosling Dec 1967 & Raelene Gosling 1968, the mother of the last 3 being a Joan, who died in 2006 . Leslie's Ancestry tree has a Jean Louise Bishop 1932-2008 as the mother of 3 of his children

I was very pleased to discover Frederick's granddaughter, Lesley Joan Bowen, in Australia. Thus the search for the vanished Frederick, beloved brother of Anne's father, Harold, was finally successful in 2011. Lesley was also pleased to discover her roots: she knew her grandfather well but he never mentioned any siblings, yet alone 15 of them!! She has now visited Roath and Bedwas and been royally entertained by Anne's sisters and families there. She has 2 Ancestry trees, Brooking & Bowen, but has not expanded the Goslings on either of these as of December 2012..
