The recruiting campaign started in Toronto on March 17th with 100 girls acting as recruiters, Lt. Col. Lennox offering a diamond bracelet to the girl who attested the most men.  The summer was spent in training at Camp Borden, and the winter at the Expedition Grounds Toronto. The battalion entrained for Halifax on April 26th 1917, and departed Halifax onboard the Justica on April 26th with a strength of 27 officers and 686 other ranks disembarking at Liverpool on May 14th. In July a colour party proceeded to Belfast to deposit the colours at St. Anne’s Church of Ireland Cathedral for the duration of the war. 1918~. Arthur, came back from the war partially blind and deaf.   I don't know about any other injuries he might have sustained but this disability was with him for the rest of his life.    He later worked in a Gentleman's Club.   Back then these were establishments where the rich and influential men of the city would go for cigars, dinner and to relax with their peers.

In his obituary, it states that he was a member ot the Irish Regiment of Canada?? - anyone any ideas on this ??

1919. An Arthur Stanley, 27, student, & Grace, 26, both of Toronto, cross the border into the US at Buffalo - Ancestry. Laura is not sure this is them, as Arthur not known to have studied and due to the fact that they would have had very little money after the war. But I feel it definitely is

1920. Robert Arthur Stanley was born to Arthur & Grace on 9/10/1920 in Ontario . Maybe called after Arthur's little brother, Robert 1903. Robert was almost the same age as David C Stanley, 1919, his cousin . Did they see each other?

|Does anyone have this b.c??

1921CC. Arthur Stanley (33), b. England, immigrated 1915, waiter, is living York, Ontario with wife Grace, 34, b.England, immigrated 1911 & Robert 8 mths . Both ages wrong: he 29 and she 38. He had in fact been a seaman, a waiter on board ship : the census entry though just says waiter and I am not sure he was still a seaman

1921 & 1930. Arthur's brother Robert, a ships steward, visited him at 195 Croyne Avenue

1922. A second child Florence Mary- Peggy - was born 20/8/1922 . Anyone have the b.c.?

1926. His half brother, David Henry Stanley, 1878, arrives to live with him at 195 Sammon Avenue in May, followed by David's wife, Phoebe, & 3 youngest children in June . . The 3 eldest children of David H Stanley arrived in Toronto ~ April 1926, but do not know whether they also descended on his house

1927 . His sister Florence married an Ernest Alfred Smith, chemist, living at 195 Sammon Avenue, in Toronto.

His half brother, David Henry Stanley, worked in the canteen of the YMCA, earning $73 /month during the war. He and his family were living in Apt.6, 1434 King Street West, Toronto 1941-1947 at least . See letters written, by his sister in law, to the War Office after their son had been killed in France in 1944

Quote from grandson David:

"I do think the Depression was a struggle for Arthur and Grace although my father, Robert, once said that they were proud never to have had to go on the dole (relief). I heard one story from my father about Arthur's difficulties in obtaining a Canadian disability pension for his wartime injuries (he returned stone deaf and partially blind). It seems that Arthur was working as a steward or waiter at the Toronto Club and mentioned his problem to staff in the kitchen. Well, someone conveyed the story to some very influential Club members and Arthur's disability pension was soon approved. The real story may actually be rather different - this is only a vague memory of something my father mentioned when I was a kid.

Arthur and Grace lived at 195 Sammon Avenue, Toronto, until their deaths. They owned the house and that gave them some security. I don't know when they bought the house- they were living there by 1926- but it was demolished soon after my father sold it. A McMansion was built on the lot and real estate prices in Toronto soared soon after. Too bad my father didn't hold onto it but my aunt Peggy needed the money and pushed for a quick sale. "

The sister Blanche referred to in the above must be Sarah Blanche Stanley 1880, a half-sister, 12 years older than he, who had died in the US in 1963. No mention of his presumably dead siblings, Laura Louise, Robert & Florence, nor his half-brother David Henry Stanley, who had died in Toronto in 1957
