Patrick Keegan ~ 1830- 1871

Born Longford, labourer, then Police officer in Castletown, Louth. - police officer stated on his daughter's 1891 m.c.

See end of page for him born Longford ~1830

Searched- in vain- Irish Newspaper Archives for any mention of him

Almost certainly number 17316 in the RIC. Born Longford, married 9/12/1862. his wife from Armagh. 3 children. Posted to Louth- FMP RIC records . I cannot find such a marriage -too early - on Irish Civil/Church Records .

1853.Patrick Keegan, labourer, joined the RIC on 14/7/1853 as a sub constable, number 17316. Born Longford, married 9/12/1862. his wife from Armagh. 3 children. Posted to Louth in 1853 - FMP RIC records .

1853-1870. FMP has numerous Petty Sessions Louth Court records where S C Pat Keegan brings people, mainly drunks, before the Court. Also an Irish Evaluation Office Book with a record in 1853 for his house

1862. Married on 9/12/1862- above RIC record . Wife was seemingly Ann Mc Ardle- she the mother of his 4 children born 1864-1871 . Marriage pre Irish Civil Records . No marriage in Church records on Irishgeanealogy- does not cover Louth!

~1866. Kate Keegan was born, co. Louth . Cannot find such a birth on Irish Civil Records 1864-1915. BUT. there are births of Anna Maria Keegan on 8/11/1866 at Castletown , Dundalk to Patrick Keegan, sub Constable of Police, of Castletown, other Ann McArdle, and of John William Keegan in 1864: of Mary Margaret Keegan 1868 & of Patrick Keegan in 1871.

Kate makes 5 children 1864-1871 & her birth has not been recorded, but maybe Anna Maria becomes called Kate ??

1871.Patrick Keegan, no. 17316 of Louth, dead by October - this from FMP RIC records. He had been in the RIC 24 days, 1 month & 18 years . He had a widow and 3 children, who received £41. 14. 5. Thus seemingly 1/2 of his 4 /5children died in infancy. 1871 is pre Irish Civil records deaths 1891-1965 . Nothing in Irish Newspaper Archives about his death. But there is a record of it on FMP, Patrick Keegan, 41, died 1871 Dundalk, Vol 12, page 493, as did his son. Patrick Keegan, 0, vol 7, page 595. .. Patrick Keegan, 41, died 5/9/1871 at Castletown of Phthsis Pulmonalis 9 months, this TB. Informant unknown - dc bought from Irishgenealogy, Roscommon . Only other death in Dundalk 1864-1871 is of James Keegan, aged 1, not their child,

so can only assume that our Kate was actually born Anna Maria

1872. A death of Ann Keegan, 38, Dundalk, could be his wife- no image, would have to order . Only suitable death 1871-1911 for her in Dundalk, but she could move!

On Rootsireland could not find this death: only one death of an Anne Keegan in 1872, in Roscommon, a spinster, dealer of eggs and 70yrs old.

Thought!!- Other 2 children are possibly William ~1876 & Mary ~1878, he living in Shop Street Louth with mother Ellen, b. Armagh, in 1901C, she married, Mary Whyte, married 13 years to Patrick Whyte, , in 1911C - but cannot find this marriage on Irish Civil records!! But a child, Julia Whyte, is born to Patrick & Mary Ellen Keegan in Rathdown in Nov 1900. All this a red herring as Alexander was born Drogheda 1879 to Alexander Keegan and Ellen Leavery!!!
