James Lawrance 1885-1973

Gillian remembers him, her grandfather, well. . Memories please More photos? What did you think his profession was in his later years

I have always been told that my grandfather's grandfather had a draper's shop in Nottingham, which would fit.  My grandfather told me of a visit his whole family once paid to the grandparents in Nottingham: this would be John Lawrance 1830-1900 .  After Sunday lunch, while the adults were snoozing or chatting, the kids got into the shop where they discovered the little white sticky price labels and stuck them all over the shop.  They got into terrible trouble. for this MISCHIEF
My grandfather also said that once he was once sitting next to a blind man at dinner who asked if he came from Nottingham.  He, of course, had never lived there but maybe he had acquired some touch of the accent or usage.

there were 8 children of that marriage - (John, Tom, Arthur, Annie, Alfie, Winnie, Jimmy, Sid) most of whom I knew. Annie who married Sydney Green and Winnie who studied at the Slade were particularly interesting.  Annie's granddaughter, my cousin Jenny, will also be very interested in your findings.

1911. James Lawrance married Constance P Killick Paddington Sep 1911- not on Ancestry London Marriages so not in a C of E

j-c-wedd

The 1911 wedding was likely in a Non Conformist chapel , but,

Ancestry does have a register of all Non Conformist marriages in London 1694-1931 and they are not on that!

Gillian knows that in their younger days they were very impressed by a non-conformist minister whose surname was Clifford.  Their grandson was named after him despite his parents (Jim and Elsie) having had a humanist wedding in the South Place Ethical Society.  Maybe he was a very non-conformist minister.  Gillian will ask her cousin, Clifford, if he knows any more.

A Baptist minister called John Clifford who was also a liberal politician and clearly a man of some distinction.  His interests, particularly in passive resistance, would have appealed to Jim & Elsie ( Gillian's aunt and uncle).  His chapel, however, appears to have been in Southwark, which is quite a long way from where any of these people lived at the time.

1913. Lionel James Lawrance born W, Ham Dec 1913 . He married - as Lionel J Lawrance!!- Elsie F Nott Holborn Jun 1939 -Jim and Elsie had a humanist wedding in the South Place Ethical Society .

In the 1939 register , living Leys Close, Harrow

Lionel J Lawrance 14 Oct 1913 Male Abrasive Wheel Moulder Married 47 1
Elsie F Lawrance 01 Mar 1912 Female Unpaid Domestic Duties Married 47

Jim & Elsie had two children Clifford 1943 and Rilla-marie (Rilla)1947

Clifford was named after John Clifford- see above
