Malcolm Gasper ~1792 - 1855

Earlier Gaspers and descendants of Malcolm

A Will of Aviet Ter Gasper, 1847 , led me to believe that our Malcolm ~1792 say- might have been his son. He, originally from Julpha, then of Bupora, left most things to his beloved son, Baldazar . But he also had a son Malcolm, and daughters Elizabeth & M

A Malcolm Gasper was the son of Mrs Goolsanoom Gregory and brother of: Arratoon Gasper; Baldazar Gasper- the Rev. died 1827 ; Petruse Gasper; Asteva Chater Gasper and Nanya Gabriel Ines Gregory. These all listed in the 1818 Will of Arratoon Gasper, died 21/5/1818 - FMP British India Office Wills and Probate.

As ALL baptisms seemingly transcribed 1793-1857 in the Armenian Church, Calcutta, I would suggest he was born pre 1793: also a pensioner in 1852?, maybe died in 1855

In fact, entire neighbourhoods were named after them - Armenian Street, Sookias Street. The Lower Circular Road Cemetery houses 332 Armenian graves.

Wife was Repsima/Hripsima 1794-1871

1814. Malcolm Gasper married Repsima/Hripsima Marcar, in Calcutta, on 16/2/1814

From Fibis site, they had the following children, baptised in the Armenian Church, Calcutta: Mariam 1815; Eghisabet 1817; Gaspar 1818-1862; Haroutun 1820; Petros 1822; Ana Maria 1823; Khachkhatun 1825; Osvanna 1827 & Nikoghayos 1829

Haratoun Malcolm Gasper's eldest son was Archibald Malcolm Gasper.

Gaspar M Gaspar died, aged 43, on 5/8/1862 Calcutta; his wife Helen on 4/11/1862. He left a Will - Investigate . Their daughters, Mary, married in 1864 & Catherine in 1865 & Hosannah in 1878 -Fibis Times of India

Elizabeth Gasper became Elizabeth I George Bagram

Mariam Gasper & Ana Maria Gasper must die before 1855

Khachkhatun may be known as Marcar by 1855

Hosana Manook A Gasper became Hosana Manook A David

In Seth's 'History of the Armenians in India...' M. Gasper had donated 100 rupees to the Armenian Philanthropic Academy and his son Gasper M Gasper 300 rupees between 1797 and 1850. ~ 80 donors in this period, donations ranging from 20 to 38000 rupees, but mainly 500-1000. So Malcolm not over wealthy

Had a son Nicholas Malcolm Gaspar 1829 - have his baptism in Armenian church Calcutta

1830. M Gasper listed as working in Secretarial Department, along with Stephanous Malcolm Gasper, their address 21 Moorgyhutta Street. Also a Vardan Gasper , no occup., at 167 China Bazaar, along with G V Gasper, writer exchange & also Paul Jordan, firm of Agabeg & Co, there at 167 China Bazaar. . Also A C Gasper, trader, 12 Portuguese Church Street - this last, Astura? Charles, is the brother of Arratoon Gasper who made a will in 1818 & also the brother of Malcam, Baldazar & Petruse Gasper, & of Nanya Gabriel Ines Gregory, to whom Arratoon left an amethyst ring

this an Extract from the Bengal Annual Register and Directory for 1831- Armenian Residents in Calcutta 1830

Do lists of Armenian Residents in Calcutta exist for other years - India Office in London??

S M Gasper has 2 children 1826 & 1827

1830. M Gasper listed as working in Secretarial Department, along with Stephanous Malcolm Gasper, their address 21 Moorgyhutta Street. Also a Vardan Gasper , no occup., at 167 China Bazaar, along with G V Gasper, writer exchange & also Paul Jordan, firm of Agabeg & Co, there at 167 China Bazaar. . Also A C Gasper, trader, 12 Portuguese Church Street

Vardan Gasper, late of Madras, dies 1834. S M Gasper, aged 32, dies 1843, thus born ~1811 - so surely not a son?

Information Nigel gleaned from Directories in the British India Office, around 1987:

BENGAL DIRECTORY:
1842 M Gasper listed on Warden's Commissaries, Armenian Church of Calcutta. In the Bengal & Agra Annual Guide & Gazetteer(year?) , 4 commisaries are given
SCOTT & Co's BENGAL DIRECTORY:
1852 M Gasper listed as Pensioner, Calcutta;
1854 Attorney Arratoon Malcolm Gasper..Public Notary. - he likely son, Harouton1820?
1855 NM listed at 1 1/2 (One-and-a half) Sukeas Lane, together with AM Gasper-same 1820 son. NM would be Nicholas Malcolm 1829.
THACKERS BENGAL DIRECTORY:

1870 N listed as Pleader, Court of Small Assizes; other Gaspers listed.
GJ Bagram listed as asst to MC Joakim & Co - I believe he was a witness to NMG's marriage.

1851. Wrote his Will

1855.M Gasper died 16/12/1855 Calcutta, aged 64- Fibis - This could be he and because his Will was seemingly invalid, 17 years passed before his affairs were wound up ??. From British India Office Wills and Probate-FMP- I have a copy of his Will

1872. Although he had died in 1855, there seems to have been problems due to one of the executors having predeceased him, & thus the Will annexed. - administration granted on 18/4/1872 , the sole surviving executor was Arratoun Malcolm Gasper and probate was granted to his eldest son, Archibald Malcolm Gasper :Nicholas Malcolm Gaspar & Johannes Gregory Bagram were the 2 Sureties( guarantors) - FMP British India Office Wills . Left 28,000 rupees

Will annexed.: The administrator steps in either when a will fails to nominate an executor or the named executor is unable to serve

De bonis non administratis, Latin for "of goods not administered," is a legal term for assets remaining in an estate after the death or removal of the estate administrator. The second administrator is called the administrator de bonis non and distributes the remaining assets.
