Alice Wolff 1877-1962
I knew Alice Baer too. In fact I was very fond of her. I used to call her 'Alice in Wonderland'. She had a lovely sense of humour and I remember she was great with children. I don't recall meeting Gerald Baer, though I probably did as he used to visit my grandmother, Maud Wolff, and was friends with my father too - Jacquie Buttriss (nee Rose, originally Rosenberg ) is descended from Philip Rosenberg, 1882-1920, who married Maud Wolff, 1888, youngest daughter of Sigismund and Henrietta.
Jacquie has her own website https://www.ghostwriter-uk.com/

I do have memories of meeting my great grandmothers . I think I may have met Alice Baer. I certainly heard a story about her being a fearful snob and one had to sit on a certain sofa in her presence. I have a very vague recollection of finding the experience quite frightening!
Ask Nick if he has any memories
I need to delete the below- but first need to ensure that all the facts are on the relevant pages
Jean Standen – my mother’s sister was married twice and had a long struggle with mental illness. She took her own life. I think her first marriage was to H.John Levy, who had something to do with the Marks and Spencer family. The corporate life didn’t suit her. No children and think they divorced quite swiftly. she was in and out of psychiatric hospital . I believe she had some very cruel treatments. I remember her staying with us quite often when we were children and I liked her. She spent quite a lot of time in the States too – possibly in Connecticut? She found happiness and a period of wellness with her second husband until her death. I visited them often when I was at uni and they lived in Sussex. Near Lewes.
I was told that Dorothy Ray Hecht had a stillborn twin brother and I know she was deaf in one ear. Had an American accent always. She was kind but hopeless practically – very spoiled and couldn’t cook or anything so their change of circumstances in later life must have been difficult for her. I always loved my visits to Knightsbridge – mum would take one of us at a time. We loved to visit Harrods and the gated square off Lowndes Street which seemed to be a bit of a secret garden. My grandmother would buy me violet creams from (sic) Harrods. They had a live in housekeeper called Elsie who was German and she and my grandmother used to go to Bingo sometimes – so I was told. I remember their flat very well – I was staying there when JFK was assassinated – I remember the shock and not understanding it very well. My grandfather was kind but a bit scary and they were both chain smokers (Dotsy died of lung cancer).
Her brother Frederick Hecht (who is on the Ancestry tree ) came to visit us in Yorkshire once. We hired a rolls Royce or a Bentley and went to York for the day. My grandparents were certainly used to the good life but I don’t think they could really afford it eventually. He was married several times. I met his daughter Wendy Lewis when she came to London (in around 1987) but sadly she died soon after. Did you see the emails from her half sister Deborah who was adopted by Fred and his then wife? Remind me please if I’ve told you that story already. There are lots of photos of Fred and Dorothy (known as Dotsy) in the album I will bring back from Sydney . They seemed to have a very glamorous life holidaying in Europe and I believe my granny, Dorothy went to finishing school in possibly Lausanne???
I recall my mother talking about the American Shoe Corporation or something like that and think this had a link to the family – mmm not sure .
