I don’t have a Joel Hecht in my database, but I do have Abraham Elias Hecht – since the family is not that closely related, I didn’t really do that much research on that branch. There are a few marriages between the Hecht family and Seldners. I guess the reason is that the origin is the same, they were from Hainstadt, a small village in Baden with a relatively big Jewish population. I can remember that maybe 20 or 25 years ago I was in contact with a professional researcher who had been hired by the Hecht family.
One Seldner married a niece of Abraham Hecht, Laura(1859-1947) (daughter of Lewis, 1826-1908) married Lippman Seldner. If I remember correctly, I have a picture of her. Let me know if you are interested.
Their daughter, Blanche (1879-1963), married Elias G. Hecht (1875-1953), I am enclosing the invitation to the wedding. I also have a picture of his tombstone. To tell you the truth, I am not sure about all the relations in the Hecht family, was pretty complicated as far as I remember. But mainly I did the research about 20 years ago, so it is not all that present anymore. I remember that I also saw the tombstone of a Moses Hecht in the Baltimore Hebrew friendship cemetery, in the “Seldner lot” (mainly Lewis and Eva Seldner plus children, I think). I think this Moses Hecht was the son of Jacob Hecht, I have a pictures of him. What I also have are a few pages from the census (1850, 1860) and the Naturalization of Jacob Hecht, brother of the above mentioned Abraham, Lewis, etc.), I am enclosing them as well as 2 pages from the 1860 census with Elias Hechts.
What I never really understood is how they connect to Samuel Hecht, the founder of the Department stores. The professional genealogist I mentioned above, told me that he is supposed to find out about their origin, but of course he could not tell me more. But I had understood that their origin was in Hainstadt – but according to Wikipedia it was in Langenschwarz.
I am sure there must have been a few connections. Two brothers of my GGGG-Grandfather, Abraham and Loeb (later Lewis), came to the US in 1840 and 1850, I think. Abraham opened a textile store in Washington DC and then also in Baltimore. When he died in 1859, his widow married Lewis. The above mentioned Lippman Seldner was their son.
Hope I could help a bit and if you have some information I’d appreciate if you shared it with me.
David
