CHRISTMAS DINNER COST TWOPENCE  (headline East London Advertiser  April 2nd 1948)
Memories of Mile Ender, Aged 101

Obvious claimant to the title of “ The Grand Old Man of Mile End” is Mr Edwin Joseph Heales, of 71 Litchfield Road, who celebrated his 101st birthday on Thursday March 25th.

Though he has recently lost his sight, he is still a cheery old gentleman and likes to join in conversation.
Mr Heales was born in Swan Yard, Bethnal Green and commenced work in the shoemaking profession under his father at the tender age of 10, for the sum of 2d. a week and retired from  that job when he was 90 years old.

He lived in Bethnal Green the greater part of his life, and in September 1940, left for Hemel Hempstead to spend the stormy days of the war with one of his daughters.  He returned to London three years ago and came to live at 71 Litchfield Road, Mile End.

He can clearly recall the days of the Crimea War, and has not had an altogether easy life.  One Christmas time when he was unemployed his family had only 2d with which to provide Christmas dinner.

They had some bread and butter and bought a halfpenny worth of tea and a pennyworth of winkles.  That was their Christmas feast “and we managed a sing song between us after” he said.

Though he is a teetotaller, Mr Heales dearly loves his pipe of tobacco, and in his younger days used to so a lot of walking and running.

He has seven daughters and one son, 35 grandchildren, 73 great-grandchildren and 26 great-great-grandchildren

Some people talk about the good old days, but Mr Heales doesn’t agree that they were so good. He can remember when bread was a shilling a quartern and his mother had to give them sailor’s biscuits as they were only two and a halfpence  per pound.

Mr Heales likes to listen to the news on the wireless, but wishes they would play some of the old-time tunes.

He has had to work hard all his life, and puts his longevity down to hard work and a good appetite.

Looking after him these days is his daughter, Mrs Mary Valentine, who is a young 74.

Another newspaper article.

“THE MAN WHO WON’T WORRY”

Mt Joseph Heales of Litchfield Road, Bow, who was 101 today has no room to hold a party for all his 35 grandchildren, 73 great-grandchildren and 26 great-great-grandchildren.

Instead they are coming on different days throughout Easter.
“Don’t worry “ is Mr Heales advice today,  “when we had a young family things were often rough, but we made ourselves happy. W
