Life at JSBSC 2013

The AGM was held at the start of February and a new President was elected, namely Bernard Rourke, after the club had been running successfully with a temporary stand-in President for the previous 3 months after the resignation of Manny in November. So, our acting President, Ted, chaired the day. I presented a resolution to obtain machine dealt hands on all days of play: this was defeated but a solution was soon after arrived at, whereby boards were hand dealt in advance and then fed through the dealing machine so that a printout of what we played could still be had: why couldn't this have been done without my resolution??

On June 8th, 20 valiant JSBSC members fought their way up to El Cid's again in order to try to win back the Cup from the Valley's Bridge Club. Alas, it was a wondrous sunny day and we must have relaxed too much out in the sun before entering the competition arena. Yet again - probably for the 5th time in a row, we were slaughtered!! But the following tea, including 2 birthday cakes, easily made up for our disappointment. And anyway it would have been impolite to defeat their 2 birthday girls, Sally & June/Pat!

On June 15th a Fun Day, run by Anita, was held at the Club. The aim of this was to drum up new members for the Bridge Club, a very necessary procedure, with the number of members dying and returning to England not being replaced by an equal number of new members.

On June 22 a Supper, preceeded by the Costa Blanca Choir, and followed by a Disco, was held at the Javea Golf Club. 108 Bridge Club and Golf Club members and friends attended

Sue organized it to a tee, the weather was perfect - well a tad chilly -and everyone wants a repeat!.The Club seems to be regressing to its early days of being truly a Social Club as well as a Bridge Club..

On November 9th, another valiant JSBSC members had a return match against the Vallees, this time on home ground. I felt really disappointed that I was not able to play as the list had gone up whilst I was in remote parts of Central Asia - it was the first biannual Vallees match that I missed in many years: .. The JSBSC put up a wonderful performance and won the cup back from the Vallees with an overwhelming 199 Imps.

"A lovely afternoon - 5 teams - 25 boards - followed by a buffet by the Inn on the Green. Overall result was Javea won by 199 IMPs. The best team for the Valleys was Sylvia and Marion; and Roy and Liz  +39 IMPs. The best team for Javea was Sue and Jackie; and Brenda and Gary  +110 IMPsWell done to the rest of the Javea team - Anita and John, Steve and Julie, Peter and Carol, John and Meg, Royston and Barbara, Gudrun and Gaby, Graham and Mike, and Maggie and Gwyneth.

On November 15th another Aspadis Tournament was held, thanks to the untiring efforts of Marie-Teresa ."We are delighted to announce 2,005.9 euros was raised on Saturday - a wonderful achievement - bearing in mind all the other charities/money raising funds we all support. Many, many thanks to Terry for all her tireless efforts - what a lady she is. Also may thanks to Anita and her supporters for sorting out the tournament!! A great day with 19 tables. Of course a great thanks to all the members who donated to the tombola and also to Javea Bridge Club for supporting the event in big numbers. Thanks also to Kay for helping Terry with the raffle; Sandra, Ann and Janet for the tombola; Dick and Bernard our auctioneers; Barman Mike for donating his wages. Lastly whoever we have a missed a big thanks including those that donated cash. Terry has already told the home to order a new washing machine and the balance will go to support repairing the air con/heating unit that was damaged in the recent storm".

On December 13th there was a Christmas party and pantomine at the club. I was in Tasmania.

A very successful day was held on Friday 13th December - it started with a bridge tournament of 19 and half tables - 2 pools and 50% prizes. This was followed by an excellent range of tapas and a free bar. The raffle was then held - a bonus of 100 euros being donated to ASPADIS.
The evening entertainment then started - The Barber Shop Boys entertained us for 40 minutes and then it was the turn of our members. What an excellent performance - many thanks to the stars - Sandra Benson, Maureen Bowen, Ineke Butcher, Jean Threlfall, Royston Bond, Fred Crowson, Phillip Day, Mike Evans, John Howden, Chris Threlfall and finally our Director - Bernard Rourke.
