We used to get parcels of clothes from Mum's brother, Lionel , & family in Michigan: Jill's clothes just fitted Hazel on arrival, and were then passed down to me. Meanwhile our mother, with Nan's help at times, would always have made a Sunday best for us, plus knitted lots of cardigans. Our school uniforms were largely home made right up to 1960 . Lionel's wife, Babe, would write newsy letters: to me these seemd full of the prices of medical care and worries about health: this put me off the States until I was in my middle twenties!!
I continued having piano lessons with Miss Hill back between Aldersbrook and Wanstead: I would catch the 101 bus from Woodford to get there. I loved spending some of my pocket money on aniseed balls!.
