1942~. Edgar Oldham Barnes joined the RAF.

He became a Wing Commander but could not rise any higher in the ranks as he refused to join the Freemasons . He served as a senior officer on an averagely large station, moving every 1 or 2 years up until 1964. Posts included Cypress & Gibralter. he sent his son to Malvern College. His next posting was in Holborn, London, where he did war pension work. And then he moved to St Anne's on Sea, still working with pensions. He retired in 1972 after 30 years with the RAF, on a full pension and a lump sum. .

He bought an expensive engagement ring in the Far East for his future wife - but it never arrived in Britain in the post. Years later he bought her another one- considerably cheaper

Around 1950 , his father decided to retire and plonked himself on his son and family, saying 'right, you can look after as now': he died a few years later . But his mother, Jessie, lived with him and his family, as they travelled around the world with the RAF, until her death in 1965
