The family would seem to be in Glyn Neath from 1903 - 1907, then in Gilfach Barford/ Bargoed - this just 2 k NE of Gelligaer by 1910

1911C. Christopher John Shattock, 35, haulers contractor- own account, is living 47 Park Place, Gelligaer, Glam - 5 rooms- with his wife, 5 children 1-11 and Thomas Higgs, 52-he is Louisa's eldest brother . . Gelligaer is ~50 k due E of Neath!

Grosmont Monmouthshire Thomas Henry Higgs Visitor Married Male Coal Merchant 52 1859

Think Doris was actually born at Gilfach Bargoed - this ~ 2 k NE of Gelligaer

Christopher & Louisa had probably 10 children, one dying as a babe: Hester M 1900, Horace C Jun Neath 1902, Stanley James Dec Neath 1903, Mabel Louise Sep Neath 1906, Lionel 1908-1908, Doris Irene 1910, Thomas R 1912,- these all registered Merthyr Tydfil - Edwin Douglas 1914 & Ernest Frank 1917 - these last 2 registered Newport Mon, - this includes Bedwas, and finally, Florence Muriel 1920

1912-~1914. The family from Gelligaer to Trethomas/Bedwas. Electoral Roll Books 1911-1914 - held in the local archives- might pinpoint the move . Children born 1914 & 1917 were registered 'Newport' & this includes Bedwas but not Gelligaer . Gelligaer ~15 k NNW of Bedwas - so a considerable move.

Children of Christopher J Shattock & Louisa Higgs

1921. Living at 11 Lower Glyn Gwyn Street, Trethomas when their daughter, Hester, married Harold Gosling in August 1921 . Yet the photo of Christopher,45, and Hester,21, the bride, shows a cottage in the background - think this must just be a cottage at the entrance to Bedwas church: they seem to have just got out of a car

lower-glyn . gosling-shattock-wed

1929. Christopher & Louisa were still living at Lower Glyn Gwyn Street, Trethomas in March 1929, when their daughter, Hester Gosling, stayed there to give birth to her second daughter, Thelma

Local Electoral Roll books could be searched to see when they moved to Rudry

Christopher & Louisa later lived at Twyn Seek Cottage Rudry- this only ~2 k SE of Trethomas : grandchildren Thora and Thelma Gosling used to visit and stay there during summer school holidays. Karen has sent me the photo below of the 2 of them in the garden there, maybe 1940s?? - but so far just an odd black & white version!!- maybe due to setting on the scanner??

Think they must have moved here after 1929?? They were there by 1939

1939 Register. Twyn Sych Cardiff . Christopher Shattock was unemployed

Christopher (J) Shattock 18 Jan 1876 Male Surface Foreman Unemployed Married 54 1
Louisa Shattock 29 Mar 1875 Female Unpaid Domestic Duties Married 54 2
Florence M Smillie (Shattock) 25 Jul 1920 Female Unpaid Domestic Duties Single 54 4

Plus an Officially Closed record. Florence is their daughter, who would have been Florence Shattock in 1939, but then the record has been altered when she married James Smillie in 1942

1953 wedding of his granddaughter Thelma. Christopher Shattock on the right- why was Louisa not there?

1956. Louisa Shattock, 79, dies Caerleon, Dec 1956

Some time after his wife died, he had an accident with his eyes and could no longer live alone. He lived with his daughter, Hester Gosling , & her husband Harold for some of this time.

Thelma says that Christopher Shattock, her grandfather, worked with horses later in his life and her Dad Harold delivered
his bread (local baker in Rumney) by horse and cart -that photo of horse and cart is on Harold's page - and so Christopher
Shattock lived with Esther and Harold when he worked with Harold's horses!- but could he do that after his eye accident?

1976 . Christopher John Shattock celebrated his 100th birthday on 18/1/1976 with a party - Anne did not go to this, but remembers thinking he looked very poorly in a photo taken at the celebration.

The cake on the table was made by my Mum, Thelma Gosling, and it was decorated by my brother,Brian, who was in college training
to be a baker at that time in 1976! I am sure my Mum has photos somewhere of both Grandad (CJS) and the birthday cake,
but I have no idea where they are, or could be, and neither has Mum, sorry!
The headless lady is Esther Gosling, his 1900 daughter. - Karen

He received a telegram from the Queen. He is wearing an eyeshade as he had eye  problems after an accident many years before!

NOTES FROM KAREN

In my ‘workbook’ of things to do I have a note
Hannah Maria Shattock lived at 148 Colum Road, Cardiff prior to 1948 and died approximately 98 years of age.  Married Christopher Shattock 19th September, 1870.  I do not have any other documents to substantiate this information except for a photocopy of their marriage which I will attach as a scanned document.
I have scanned an old photograph of Grosmont where the Higgs lived with the spire of St. Nicolas Church, an aerial view of Grosmont and Castle.  A photograph of Christopher Shattock on his 100th birthday, where he is wearing an eyeshade as he had eye  problems after an accident many years before!  Photograph of Doris Shattock (Doll) on her wedding day and next to her is her mother Louisa Shattock and behind her is Christopher Shattock I think!  Coloured photo of Christopher Shattock (on end in cream jacket) with his daughter Doll who is standing with her daughter Joyce and her husband Dudley, and Joyce’s children Martin and David (baby) and David is now 47 years old.  My maths is not good to work out how old Christopher would have been!    Taken in Luton Bedfordshire where Doll (nee Shattock) sister to Esther Maria Shattock.   Photo of Esther and Doll in Esther’s living room in Rumney.  Photo of cottage in Rudry, Near Caerphilly where Christopher and Louisa lived called Twyn Sych (pronouched Two and Seek).  It is still standing but no longer a thatched roof!! Thora and Thelma used to visit and stay there during summer school holidays.

I took notes of the Glamorgan Constabulary History as I joined the South Wales Constabulary in 1972 as a civilian support staff member and retired in March, 2011 after 37 and a half years service!!  Longer than Christopher Shattock who retired in 1901
