Javea Bridge Club at the Arenal 2008

David discovered that Javea School of Bridge & Social Club gave Improvers' lessons in November 2004 when I was looking for social bridge in Moraira and he was looking for some 'tranquilidad en casa' to pursue his Web site business. I protested that I did not want lessons, nor did I want to play at a Club: needless to say I was dragged there kicking & screaming one Tuesday afternoon, to discover that I did need lessons & also I met up with Marie O'Riordan, also newly arrived in Moraira, and together we profited for 4 months from the lessons imparted by David Ash and his enthusiastic helpers: Brenda, Liz Blance, Liz Unwin & Gerry

I was only in Spain for 3/4 months for the first two years, and played, nervously, only on a Friday. Then in 2006/7 I progressed to playing on a Wednesday as well, until by September 2007 I was persuaded to assist Liz Blance in giving the Beginners' lessons at the club, and the following years to take on the Improvers. This made me feel more part of the club: to be honest, I felt an outsider for almost 3 years, and this should be a lesson for all its members to make more effort to make everyone feel welcome. Also teaching is a great way to improve one's game!: I often felt it was the blind leading the blind!!, but I was always one step ahead!.

Since then I have never looked back. One of the memorable events of the year is a Teams tournament of our Javea Bridge Club against the Vallees club, especially when it takes place on their home ground - with magnificent views and sumptious teas. The photos I have below are of a tournament, actually in 2009, in our club: we have long since thrown the ghastly plastic tableclothes away!!!
